South Denver Anesthesiologists, P.C. ("SDA") is a physician-owned, private practice anesthesia corporation with service locations concentrated on the south side of metro Denver. The group is growing to service new hospital contracts and ambulatory surgery center business.
The group first formed as a partnership in the early 1960s and incorporated in 1970. SDA provides the majority of the anesthesia services at the three hospitals in south suburban Denver: Porter Adventist Hospital (369 beds, 30 years anesthesia service history), Swedish Medical Center (368 beds, 30 years service history) and Littleton Adventist Hospital (139 beds, 13 years). In August of 2003 we started providing anesthesia services at Sky Ridge Medical Center (109 beds). The group is currently covering over 50 anesthetizing locations in hospital OR suites, ambulatory surgery centers, and office based sites.
SDA physicians maintain their skills by practicing full-spectrum anesthesia including general surgery, OB, cardiac, and "bread and butter" pediatrics. The case mix includes all the major surgical sub-specialties except pediatric cardiac surgery. A team system affords opportunities to increase the proportion of peds, OB, and hearts in an individual physician's case mix. Optional teams include pain management, kidney or liver transplant, trauma, and interventional radiology. Currently, there are no opportunities for exclusively sub-specialized practice. Candidates for SDA are board certified or board eligible and actively in the process of attaining ABA board certification.
Our pain service is an elective team that provides post-operative pain management and performs chronic pain management procedures. The group does not do medical management for chronic pain.
The group is governed by a seven-physician board of directors. Board members serve three-year terms and are limited to two consecutive terms. The board's decision making process is supported by a management team consisting of a CEO and 3 healthcare business professionals. Physician committees and task forces provide opportunities for SDA physicians to get involved and shape decisions on every major facet of the group business.
The group's physician income distribution plan consists of a salary plus an incentive pay plan for work done beyond the end of the regular schedule (3:30 pm) and on weekends. This system has evolved over our history to accommodate individual needs without generating the competitive environment associated with fee for service systems. New physicians are paid from the first day of work, including orientation days.
The group offers a full range of pre-tax benefits. The structure is designed to minimize tax liability and provide the maximum degree of flexibility to suit individual physician needs. Colorado's excellent professional liability insurance climate ensures that premiums remain among the lowest in the country.
